‘30 Years of Berlin

Club Culture outside

of the Techno Grid’
Talk & Selection by Daniel W Best

Starting out as a passionate vinyl DJ, Daniel became known for his eclectic, story-driven sets and his ability to connect genres and generations. His journey soon expanded into promoting and curating — from running the legendary Escobar Club, a hub for Berlin’s reggae and dancehall scene, to co-hosting Dixon’s influential Innercityvisions nights, and curating Jazzanova’s long-running Kaleidoskop sessions, which helped define the city’s soulful sound.

Today, Daniel remains a connector, curator, and ambassador for music with groove and integrity — from the DJ booth to the festival stage, from label collaborations to mentoring the next generation. His story is a living chronicle of Berlin’s evolution — seen through the eyes of someone who kept the groove alive, just off the beaten (techno) track.

We are joined by Daniel W Best as he talks about the last 30 years in the indy music business in Berlin.

From the illegal clubs of the 90ies, dj gigs, labels, booking-agency, XJazz Festival.
Greetings Daniel

For more than three decades, Daniel W. Best has been a central figure in shaping Berlin’s musical identity — but from a path distinctly outside the city’s famous techno grid. Since the early 1990s, Daniel has dedicated his life to bringing soul, jazz, funk, reggae, and other organic grooves to stages, clubs, and festivals across Europe.

As part of Sonar Kollektiv, Daniel co-compiled several influential releases, including Polish Jazz with Jazzanova on JCR, G.I. Disco with Kalle Kuts on BBE, and three Best Seven Selections compilations on Best Seven / Sonar Kollektiv — each reflecting his deep musical curiosity and global outlook.

Alongside his work as founder of Best Works Records and Best Works Agency (a division of Sonar Kollektiv), Daniel also established the label Best’s Friends, further expanding his platform for timeless, soulful, and forward-thinking sounds. Through these projects, he has supported countless artists, curated international stages, and built lasting creative partnerships that continue to shape Berlin’s diverse musical landscape.
